Tait: A week in and we are just starting to get our feet under us. We were in Antigua for a week doing this sort of poor
expat thing. We used the pool at the local hotel, hiked a volcano and watched balls of lava roll down the hill past our recently imprinted footsteps. People roasted marshmellows on many pointed sticks and served them to us fresh from the lava. Some people wore sandals up the scree and we watched their feet slowly be devoured by the volcanic rock, two days cool. We stayed in a hotel that looked over the local church and listened to the roar of afternoon rain on metal roofs. We lost and found many things, including passports and money, in the newness of our travels. You´d think it would be easier to find things when all you have is a backpack.
Most importantly for the purposes of this blog, we had some spectacular meals and some horrible ones. The first night saw a little cucaracha in the beans - things were uphill from there. We ate at the locals dive and I had el menu del dia - drink, asparagus soup, beef cutlet fried in crumbs and garlic with mayonesa salad and tapioca for desert. The next day we found the only pupuseria in town, staffed by two El Salvadorean women. We ordered and she brought out the ingredients and made the pupusas on a gas grill in front of our noggins. The trick was the water she put on the masa before she out the pupusas on the grill.
That´s it for the first post. Food pictures to come.
Oh, la cucaracha! I love it. Can't wait to hear more of your adventures.
